Famous for its biodiversity, both in habitats and wildlife, Africa is home to many species that evoke a sense of wonder, wonder and wonder. However, due to contributing factors such as habitat loss, hunting, climate change and human-wildlife conflicts, many of these endangered species are now threatened with extinction.
Endangered Species In Africa

Description: Based on its scientific name, the African wolf is known as the painted wolf. They are carnivores and great hunters. They have a lot of red, black, brown, yellow and white hairs, big round ears and slim and strong. Unlike domestic dogs, they have four toes on each foot, they have no dew claws!
Population: Estimates vary, but the number of common animals once found across sub-Saharan Africa has dropped to between 3,000 and 6,600.
Habitat: African wild dogs like lowlands and grasslands. They live best in areas with low human density and access to more wildlife.
Location: They are found mostly in fragmented populations in Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa and parts of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Several conservation initiatives are underway to re-introduce and increase population in protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries.
Types Of Lions, Endangered And Extinct
Description: Mountain gorilla is a subspecies of the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri). They have thick hair, long hair, a strong and strong body, broad chest, long muscular arms and a prominent head with prominent eyebrows. The famous Silverback is loud and impressive.
Population: Mountain monkeys are endangered and very rare. However, thanks to intensive conservation efforts and the valuable contribution of people like Dian Fossey, their population has grown to about 1,004 today.
Habitat: Mountain monkeys are found in cold, foggy mountains and bamboo forests at altitudes of 2,500 to 4,000 meters. They usually live on the ground but can climb trees. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, shoots, stems, fruits, insects and sometimes small animals.
Location: Mountain gorilla is found in two remote areas of Africa. The first is Mount Virunga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Wanda and Uganda. The other is in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Although protected, the area is unfortunately vulnerable to human encroachment, poaching and civil unrest.
Africa’s Endangered Species By The Numbers
Description: Parrots are unique to their protective keratin scales, so they are ruthlessly hunted. In fact, they are the most traded animals in the world. They are solitary and nocturnal animals that feed mainly on ants and lice.
Population: The exact number of pangolins worldwide is not yet known, but all eight pangolins are known to be under threat. There are four species of African pangolin: the black-bellied white pangolin and the large ground pangolin, as well as the Temminck land pangolin, ranging from endangered to endangered.
Location: African pangolins are distributed throughout the continent. Temminck’s terrestrial animals are found in East and South Africa, including South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
Also known as ‘Hunter’s hartebeest’ or ‘hunter ant’, Hirola is a medium-sized ant with long, thin horns and distinct white spots.
Exploring The Endangered Species Of Africa
Population: The population varies, but with the remaining population of 300 to 600 individuals, they are endangered and the most endangered apes in the world. Their survival is threatened by poaching, drought and loss of habitat.
Description: The river rabbit is a small mammal that lives at night with reddish-brown fur and white circles around each eye. Unlike other rabbits, female rabbits give birth to only one child per year.
Population: Exact numbers do not exist, but it is believed that no more than 500 river rabbits are currently surviving in the wild. This makes it one of the most endangered animals in the world.
Habitat: River rabbits are found in limited distribution areas. They live only in dense vegetation such as bushes along the seasonal rivers in the middle of the Karoo Desert in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.

Location: The Anysberg Nature Reserve and the Sanbona Game Reserve in the Western Cape are the main habitats of the species.
Description: Known for its two prominent horns and thick, hairless skin, the black rhinoceros is a powerful symbol of African wildlife. Several conservation efforts have been launched to protect these animals.
Population: The black rhino is still endangered, although its current population has risen to about 6,195 (January 2023).
Habitat: Black rhinos are found in many habitats, including thorn forests, grasslands, dry forests, dense forests, and river and swamp forests.
African Wild Dog
Location: Countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya have black rhino populations. Etosha National Park in Namibia and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. In South Africa, Kruger National Park is an important place to see black rhinos.
Cape vultures with open wings land at the feeding ground. The Cape Vulture is the largest bird in Africa with a wingspan of 2.3 to 2.6 meters. The species was added to the IUCN Red List in 2015.
Cape Griffon is a vulnerable Old World vulture that infects parts of South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and northern Namibia. They are large birds with wingspans of more than 2.5 meters. They lay only one egg per year and are characterized by pale underparts, dark tail and flying wings, and the head and neck almost bare.
Their sharp eyes and strong beak make them a great scavenger picker who plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy environment. To promote awareness of their important role, the first Saturday of September is designated as Vulture Awareness Day every year.
The 10 Endangered Species In South Africa
Population: Cape vultures are classified as vulnerable with declining population trends. By 2021, it is estimated that there will be less than 5,000 captive breeding pairs left in the wild. Cape vultures are threatened by habitat loss, poisoning and power line collisions.
Location: Cape vultures are endemic to South Africa. Their range includes South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana and northern Namibia. Conservation initiatives include ‘vulture restaurants’, which provide them with safe food.
Description: The Beira is a thin, adaptable and easy-to-understand dwarf. It has brown-gray hairs, white belly, large ears and short, pointed upright horns.
Population: The exact number is unknown but is classified as vulnerable to habitat destruction and poaching. Only a few thousand are thought to be able to survive in the wild.
Why Are African Wild Dogs So Endangered?
Habitat: Beira otters grow in dry and semi-arid environments, especially in forest or rocky areas. Their diet consists of leaves, stems, shoots, nectar, grass, flowers and fruits.
Location: Crossing the horns of Africa, the range of the Beira antelope is limited to the regions of Somalia and eastern Ethiopia, and often in remote areas.
Description: The Gray Parrot, also known as the African Gray Parrot or Congo, is a medium to large parrot known for its intelligence and “speaking” ability. It has a large beak, white face, gray fur and an attractive red tail. When young, the eyes are dark gray but turn yellow as the bird matures.
Population: The number of gray parrots has dropped dramatically in recent decades due to the high demand for them in pet trade and the loss of habitat, so they are now classified as An endangered species. Illegal trafficking remains a problem.
Monitoring Endangered Species In Southern Africa: Insights
Habitat: Their main habitat is dense rainforest, but they are also found in mangrove forests, dense forests and even cultivated areas. They migrate based on the availability of food and a suitable nest location.
Location: Its range includes Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Due to deforestation and habitat degradation, their population has become fragmented
Description: The Ethiopian wolf is the most endangered carnivore in Africa. It is a long-legged flea with reddish-brown and white fur on its tail, face and throat. It has a pointed nose and large ears. Its size and color are similar to those of a fox, which is why its other names are Simien fox and Simien wolf.
Population: This animal is on the verge of extinction, with only about 366 people surviving due to habitat destruction (often transmitted by domestic dogs) and poaching.
Both African Elephant Species Endangered And Critically Endangered
Habitat: Adapted to high altitudes, Ethiopian wolves are found in the grasslands and Afro-Alpine grasslands, where rodents are abundant, their main prey.
Location: They are remote areas in the Ethiopian highlands and are restricted to some remote areas on Mount Bale and Simien, especially Mount Bale National Park.
